Steven J. Roberts
Attorney
Steve Roberts has been practicing law in Southern California since 1987. He represents clients in lawsuits and disputes, and also enjoys handling complicated business and real estate transactions. Five of his cases have been of such significance on appeal that they were selected for publication by California Courts of Appeal.
Through his work as a public arbitrator hearing cases for the NASD (stock and bond disputes) and the San Diego County Bar Association (attorney-client fee disputes), Steve has had first-hand experience in seeing cases from the standpoint of a neutral decision-maker. This has further enhanced his abilities to effectively advocate for his clients.
Steve is admitted to the State, Federal and Bankruptcy Courts, and has handled cases both for plaintiffs and for defendants. He has years of experience representing clients in these types of lawsuits:
• Securities (stock and bond) fraud
• Business disputes
• Unfair business competition claims
• Employment discrimination claims
• Construction defect lawsuits
• Mechanics liens/stop notices
• Trademark and copyright disputes
• Corporate shareholder disputes
• Contract disputes
• Alter-ego claims (claims that shareholders are responsible for a corporation's debts)
• Trust disputes
• Insurance coverage disputes
• Vehicle towing disputes
• "Cumis counsel" appointment (defending insureds where there is a coverage dispute)
• Elder abuse
• Class actions
Most recently, Steve was successful in spearheading a lawsuit against the City of San Diego that assured public access to Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course for the thousand-plus members of the Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Club.
Steve graduated with honors from California Western School of Law in San Diego. Before that, he graduated from UC Berkeley with a B. A. in Philosophy; while there, he was an All-American swimmer and the Pacific-8 Conference Champion. Between college and law school, he was a PGA of America Class “A” certified golf professional at Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club, The Olympic Club, and Los Verdes Golf Club.
Steve resides in Carlsbad / La Costa with his wife of 31 years, Ursula, who is an elementary special education teacher in the Vista School District. His interests include watching theatrical productions featuring his daughter Kelly, who is a playwright and actor, and playing golf with his daughter Samantha, who was a four-year letter winner on San Diego State’s women’s golf team.
